Electrical Design Engineer (02-14-083)

Location: Louisville, CO, USA

The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for providing Engineering deliverables that meet contractual, schedule, and budget requirements for assigned commercial and utility solar PV projects. This individual will work with a Mechanical Design Engineer and Design Consultants and develop a design for review by a Senior Design Engineer.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal RGS Energy Design Engineers to design commercial and utility scale solar electric systems including roof-mounts, fixed ground-mounts, tracking ground-mounts, and carports

  • Provide design progress visibility to Senior Design Engineers and Engineering Management as necessary

  • Coordinate with customers, project partners (development, finance, construction), utilities and AHJs as RGS Energy technical representative

  • Coordinate with external professional engineers of multiple trades including: Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, and Electrical

  • Review RFPs and complete short lead time tasks with Project Development Design Engineers

  • Select optimal equipment for site- and customer-specific requirements, and coordinate with manufacturers and vendors as necessary

  • Use modeling software to create system production estimates

  • Use design tools to configure electrical system, size conductors, over-current protection devices and distribution equipment; determine electrical safety hazards

  • Provide technical support during construction, startup, testing, system commissioning, and performance monitoring

  • Research AHJ, utility and customer requirements. Integrate applicable codes and specifications to project design.

  • Coordinate with utility representatives to design and perform interconnections

  • Design data acquisition systems for monitoring PV plant performance

  • Evaluate new equipment and design tools

  • Some travel is necessary - estimated (8) days per year

  • Other duties as assigned


 
Essential Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Engineering is required; Electrical Engineering is preferred

  • 2 or more years of experience designing power systems, preferably power generation

  • Solar design and installation experience highly desirable

  • Knowledge of CAD software is required, experience with AutoCAD is preferred

  • Experience using electrical design tools is required

  • Thorough knowledge of National Electrical Code is required

  • Knowledge of system production estimation software highly desirable, experience with PVSyst is preferred

  • Ability to organize and lead small groups and meetings

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Knowledge of medium voltage electrical and protection circuit design preferable

  • Knowledge of communication design preferable

  • Detail-oriented with high standard of quality for deliverables
